From an ideological perspective it may have been an excellent idea to declare war on Russia and gain the help of Austria and Germany to do so, but surely there must have been a strategist somewhere in the halls of power who could foresee that being at war with Russia, Romania, Greece, Italy, Portugal, France, Britain, the US and Japan was not an excellent idea, particularly for a country that wasn't exactly the most militarily advanced in all of the world...
Well, yes, but they managed to last by carefully picking their conflicts and remaining on the good side of France and Britain, which is the exact opposite of what they did in World War I...
I like him because of his common sense in the face of blatant idiocy. I mean, I really like the Ottoman Empire, it's one of my favourite countries from history, but I really cannot comprehend how anybody could possibly have thought that it would be a good idea for the Ottomans to enter World War I, especially not on the Central Powers side. Perhaps Atatürk wasn't the only one who could see the stupidity of this decision, but he's most famous for it, and that's the main reason I like him...
